Self-Esteem is the emotional evaluation of how we feel about who we are, how much we like and approval of who we are. Your self-esteem is developed over time. Everyone (parents, relatives, friends, coworkers, partners, etc) in your life and your experiences (good or bad) have contributed to and affected your level of self-esteem. People with high self-esteem carry within them a loving parent who is proud of their successes and tolerant of the failures. People with low self-esteem carry within them a disapproving parent who is very critical of their failures and has a short-lived pleasure when they succeed at something. There is a cyclical relationship between self-esteem and our actions. People with low self-esteem tend to get stuck in a cycle of de-valuing and doing nothing meaningful.

Affects of Low Self Esteem on the Body
Our closest relationships help to define who we are. So negative relationships ultimately equal negative feelings and a negative perception of ourselves. Toxic relationships tend to make us feel drained, insecure, unheard, and uncomfortable about being who we are.
Drugs and alcohol are used as a means to help ease the negative feelings they have about themselves. But over time this method of escapism develops into an addiction and of course this has detrimental effects on their already depleted self-esteem levels.
